Books and research on Local SEO for franchise chains

What we measure and write down, we apply every month to the locations we work for.

By Gijs Bodenstaff · Updated:

What we know about the local visibility and AI visibility of chains comes from two sources: our own research and three books by founder Gijs Bodenstaff. The franchise chain benchmark 2026 examined five hundred profiles across one hundred large chains in the Netherlands over six months; only 40% of them were complete. On this page you can read how that research was set up, what it found and what each Local SEO book for franchise chains covers.

Why does a marketing agency carry out its own research into franchise chains?

There are plenty of opinions about the local visibility of chains, but few Dutch figures. Anyone advising a franchise brand wants to be able to show where the chain stands compared with similar chains. That is why we do our own measuring. The research was carried out by LocalSEOLab.nl and Stichting LODAK, with Stanley Leijnse as researcher and chair of the foundation.

We are not interested in a report that gathers dust on a shelf. The findings determine which elements are standard in our packages, such as the 24-hour response time for reviews and the monthly completeness check for each profile.

How was the benchmark of franchise chains set up?

The set-up is easy to repeat, and that is deliberate. Any franchise brand can compare the same measurement points for its own locations with the findings. The full publication is available on franchiseseo.nl.

Which key figures came out of the 2026 chain benchmark?

What stands out: virtually every chain examined has its marketing handled by an agency or an in-house department. So the gap is not a lack of marketing, but the work for each location that falls outside the normal planning.

How do we use the benchmark findings in our work for franchisors?

Every figure is reflected in a fixed part of our service. The completeness check is part of managing Business Profiles for each location. The 24-hour response time is at the heart of our review management for every branch. Unanswered questions, posts and contact buttons are covered in the local SEO checklist per location.

For a new franchise brand we compare the same measurement points with the benchmark in a baseline measurement. This immediately shows which locations are above or below the average of the large chains, and from baseline measurement to roll-out the same yardstick stays in use.

Which books on Local SEO for franchise chains has Gijs written?

The books are written for marketers and management teams of franchise brands, not for SEO specialists. They differ in length and depth. Read more about the author on the page about Gijs Bodenstaff.

The handbook as a reference work

The Franchise Local SEO & GEO Handboek 2027 is the most extensive volume. It is meant to be picked up when you have a specific question, for example how to structure the accounts of dozens of locations. ISBN 979-8176015843.

Governance for larger chains

Local SEO 2026 voor Franchiseketens deals with the question of who decides what as a chain grows from ten to hundreds of locations.

The short version to get started

Local SEO & GEO voor Franchiseketens 2026 can be read in an evening and works well as a shared starting point within a marketing team.

How does the knowledge from books and research reach your locations?

Reading a book is something different from applying it every month across thirty locations. The team applies the methods, using AI for data collection and alerts and people for checks and contact. GEO comes from the same place: how locations become visible in ChatGPT is described in the books and measured in practice with fixed test questions. Does the franchise brand already have a regular agency? Then we work as a complement to your current agency. Read more about the people in the story behind our agency.

Questions about the books and the benchmark

Who carried out the Local SEO Benchmark Franchise Chains 2026?
The research was carried out by LocalSEOLab.nl, the test lab of Gijs Bodenstaff, together with Stichting LODAK. The researcher was Stanley Leijnse, who chairs the foundation and has worked in local visibility since 2010. Several experienced Local Guides (level 6 and above) assessed the profiles, so the assessment did not depend on one person.
Which chains are included in the benchmark?
The benchmark covers the 100 largest Dutch franchise chains, with 500 Google Business Profiles in total. We do not name chains on this website. The research is about patterns in the sector, not about singling out individual franchise brands. If you want to know where your own locations stand, we carry out a separate baseline measurement for that.
How long were the profiles monitored?
Six months. A snapshot says little about review responses or the rhythm of Google Posts, because these can vary greatly from week to week. By monitoring for six months, it becomes clear what a chain does structurally and what is coincidence. That makes the figures usable as a yardstick for your own locations.
Can I compare my own franchise brand with the benchmark?
Yes. The measurement points were deliberately kept simple: profile completeness, review response time, Google Posts, WhatsApp integration and unanswered questions. You can track them yourself for a few locations. If you want it for all locations at once, we measure it in the free visibility scan and compare it with the findings.
Which book suits a marketer who is just starting with Local SEO?
Start with the slimmest book from June 2026: 26 strategies in 83 pages, rounded off with a three-month plan. The book from July 2026 is the logical next step once you are working on governance between head office and locations. The 373-page handbook is mainly a reference for anyone who wants to go deeper.
Where can the books be bought?
All three books are available through Amazon. Gijs Bodenstaff's author page lists them together, with the available formats per title: paperback, e-book, Kindle or hardcover. The links on this page go directly to the Dutch Amazon page of each book.
Why three books instead of one?
Because readers differ. A managing director wants to grasp the big picture in an evening, a marketer wants to know how tasks are divided between head office and the locations, and a specialist wants a reference work for details such as account structure. Each book is written for one of those readers, with the same core.
Is this page intended to sell books?
No. The books and the research show what our way of working is based on. You do not need them to work with us, and anyone who works with us gets the knowledge applied rather than on paper. We mention them here because you have a right to know where our approach comes from.
Why do you not name the best chains from the research?
A ranking with names says little about your own franchise brand and quickly becomes outdated. What matters more is which way of working makes the difference: a fixed review process, a monthly check of all fields and an owner for each location. You can apply those criteria to any franchise brand, even one that is not in the top 100.
Will there be a new edition of the benchmark?
We make no commitment about that on this page. What we do is track the same measurement points every month for the locations we work for. As soon as new publications appear, they are added to this page and to the knowledge base, together with the method and source.
